"The underlying feel of the music in the album is of a party anthem - and of summer open-air. Powered by some wicked slide guitar from Jeff Pevar and Red's sassy voice, lead off track "Dusty Shack" recalls Tommy James and the Shondells for sheer fun, danceabilty and sing-along potential. As title implies, the album goes from sex (the retro honky-tonk piano driving "Let's Go Home") to religion ("Pray") to politics (the anti-war "Body Count"). An ominous Tony Levin-esque bass line prods "Sittin' Purty," while the swampy "Lazy Rollin' River" has not-so-latent Creedence qualities, and give Red a place to stretch and bend phrases to their limit. Often, Red conveys the vocal equivalent of finger-pointing in your chest, and other times she's trying to coax you in. But all the time is pure pleasure. " -

"Lazy Rollin' River" has the idleness of J.J. Cale and the bayou rhythms of Creedence..."

"De cd Sex Religion Politics van de voor mij onbekende zangeres Rebel Red heeft een beetje agressief ogende, punky foto op de voorzijde van de cover en op de achterzijde de Amerikaanse vlag (twee uitersten?). Ook wordt er vermeld dat de hoes is gemaakt van 100% gerecycleerd materiaal, iets waar ze terecht fier op mag zijn. Deze dingen schetsen toch zo een beetje de sfeer waarin deze zangeres opereert. Red is een New Yorkse singer-songwriter/producer, opgegroeid in Engeland, die de rock-'n-roll leerschool heeft gevolgd door veel te spelen op Amerikaanse militaire basissen in Duitsland. Deze cd is reeds haar vierde werkstuk, nadat ze na de eerste drie een lange break heeft genomen om haar kinderen groot te brengen. De muziek is veeleer klassieke rock-'n-roll, met af en toe wat rootsinvloeden, ook wat soul, country en r&b. De eerste song Dusty Shack is een goeie rocksong, met een mooi stukje dobro van Jeff Pevar (die ook nog bij Bonnie Raitt heeft gespeeld) en de muziek zou van Tom Petty's Heartbreakers kunnen zijn. De stem van Rebel Red doet af en toe wel heel erg aan Patti Smith denken, net als haar felle manier van zingen en ook de strijdbare toon van enkele liedjes. Als je de ogen sluit en goed luistert, zou je soms zweren dat je Patti Smith hoort zingen, en dit geldt nog meer voor het erg mooie, energiek rockende tweede nummer Body Count, waarin ze de oorlog in Irak op de korrel neemt. Niet voor niets dat er op haar website een link staat naar Neil Youngs Living With War Today. De muziek op de hele cd heeft een aangename, organische sound die veel weg heeft van de reeds genoemde Heartbreakers, alsook The Byrds (de mooie gitaartjes doen soms denken aan de wereldberoemde gitaarsound van Robert McGuinn en co.) en natuurlijk ook veel Patti Smith. Absoluut geen probleem, dit zijn voorwaar niet de minsten om mee vergeleken te worden. Tussen haakjes, er is nog een overeenkomst met Patti Smith; ook zij nam een lange onderbreking in haar muzikale carrière om haar kinderen groot te brengen. Rebel Red is ook een grote fan van Levon Helm, en af en toe hoor je ook wel wat invloeden van The Band in haar muziek doorklinken. Dan Let's Go Home, een beetje jazzy qua sfeer en vervolgens het nummer Pray, wederom een klassiek opgebouwde medium tempo rocksong, maar wat voor één! Dit is zeer mooi, en af en toe zou je zweren dat je Robert McGuinn hoort meespelen, ik kan het niet laten nogmaals deze vergelijking aan te halen, maar als je dit hoort, weet je wat ik bedoel. Het volgende nummer Sittin' Purty met een gek stemmetje en een beetje reggae-invloeden overstijgt de middelmaat niet, zeker niet als er ook nog wat bombast komt opzetten. Maar snel naar de volgende song, American Girl, één van de hoogtepunten van de plaat, met spetterend gitaarspel, en ook piano en orgel. Een soort statement over haarzelf, waar ze voor staat, wat ze is. Dan het rootsy Lizzard Belly, de prachtige ballade On My Guard, nog een hoogtepunt van deze plaat, met mooie samenzang en daarna Lazy Rolling River, een mooie bluesy song die met zijn swampy sound aan CCR doet denken. Beide songs bevatten ook zeer smaakvol slidegitaarspel van Jeff Pevar, niet voor niets dat deze man met Bonnie Raitt heeft gespeeld, toch wel de 'Queen Of The Slide Guitar'... C'mon Suzy, nog een hele mooie snelle blues, classic school, zeer genietbaar ook tijdens live optredens, lijkt me zo. De afsluiter What's On The Other Side is gewoon goed zonder meer. Al bij al een plaatje dat ik nog dikwijls en met veel plezier zal draaien. Meer moet dat af en toe niet zijn. O ja, en denk eraan, vooral niet op de lelijke hoes afgaan, verwen je oren en geef deze cd een kans." - , MazzMusikaS
